Platinum group metals (PGM) company Wesizwe has decided to adopt a new production strategy for its Bakubung mine, in the North West, as a means to enhance long-term value.

The company has decided to halt its previously adopted phased ramp-up approach, including a one-million-tonne-a-year production strategy and will instead pursue a revised development strategy based on a single-stage ramp-up to a 3.5-million-tonne-a-year operation.

"Preliminary technical assessments indicate that this approach represents the most optimal development pathway," Wesizwe says, adding that it will undertake a comprehensive optimisation study to confirm these findings and further refine the execution strategy.

During the current financial year, the company will prioritise the completion of the optimisation study alongside underground development activities, aimed at establishing the infrastructure required to support the envisaged production ramp-up.
