Industry organisation the South African Iron and Steel Association (Saisi) says it, and its members, “strongly condemn” the open-ended strike action which has begun within Transnet.

This follows after Transnet was unable to reach agreement with the two recognised unions, the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union and the United Transport and Allied Trade Union, on wage increases.

Transnet, which operates the country’s freight rail services and South Africa’s ports, is already operating below its capacity, the association points out.

“This substandard service has had a significant impact on the local steel industry and its ability to manufacture steel to meet its customers’ demands. In some instances, primary steel producers have had to shut down operating plants due to the unavailability of raw materials, at great cost to the business and the economy.

“This illegal strike action, compounded by the ongoing energy crisis in South Africa, is likely to have devastating consequences for all sectors of the South African economy, at a time when the country is trying to rebuild following the significant impact of the Covid-19 pandemic,” Saisi says.

It has also urged all parties to work together to reach an agreement as soon as possible.
