Name of the Project
Port of Durban road rehabilitation project.

Location
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).

Project Description
Intensified pressure caused by an influx of trucks on the Port of Durban’s road infrastructure has prompted the rehabilitation of roads in key container-handling port precincts – the Container and Maydon wharfs, and the liquid bulk Island View precinct.

The Maydon wharf will take precedence, with 16 roads set for repairs, followed by Island View, with three roads, and Bayhead, with two.

In addition to repairing the structural defects, the restoration of functional defects, such as surface drainage issues, owing to damaged manholes and inlets caused by heavy vehicles, is included in the project scope.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
R233-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to take 24 months to complete.

Latest Developments
TNPA has reported steady progress of the road rehabilitation project.

Since September 2023, the project teams have successfully completed 58% of the road works in the Maydon Wharf and Bayhead precincts.

Further, the Bayhead and South Coast road intersection, as well as the Toulon, Davey, Parker, McBride, Fletcher, Wisely, Maydon and Johnstone roads, have undergone major refurbishments entailing stormwater pipe jetting, sidewalks and channels cleaning, as well as the milling of existing asphalt and paving.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
