Mining on Top Africa (#MOTA) is set to return to Paris, France, for its 7th annual edition on July 3-4, 2024, at Meliá Paris La Défense. This premier African mining congress will gather industry leaders, government officials, investors, and stakeholders to discuss the future of Africa’s mining sector, reflecting the growing global interest in Africa's mining industry amidst rising demand for critical minerals essential for green and digital transitions, defence, and space technologies.

The opening ceremony of #MOTA 2024 will feature an esteemed lineup of Ministers from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Senegal, Benin, and Chad. Industry stakeholders from Gabon, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, France, Germany, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Belgium, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and the Netherlands will also attend, making #MOTA a key platform for strengthening Europe-Africa alliances in the mining sector.

Key sessions at the event include:

Mining Partnerships for Long-Term Successful Projects: This panel will delve into negotiation processes and mining agreements between African governments and European investors, EU laws and their extraterritorial impacts on mining companies, and updates on Africa’s mining codes and legal frameworks. Featured speakers include Souleyman Eli Guihinimi from Chad, Isabelle Ramdoo from the IGF, and Martin Kwaku Ayisi from Ghana. Creating Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Value Chains While Maximising Production: Discussions will cover benchmarking international best practices, eco-friendly strategies for shared value, and the importance of establishing competitive mineral value chains in Africa. Speakers include Roseline Anna Coumba MBAYE from Senegal, Dr. Theo Acheampong from the European Council on Foreign Relations, and Assheton Carter from the Fair Cobalt Alliance. This session is chaired by Yvonne Semba Chileshe from OACPS.

Energy Transition and Mining – Accessing Africa’s Critical Minerals: Panellists will explore Africa’s potential in energy transition goals, value addition strategies, and alignment with the EU’s energy transition plans. Speakers include Dr. Nombasa Tsengwa from Exxaro, Marc-Antoine Eyl-Mazzega from the French Institute of International Relations, and Ismael Diakite from the Chamber of Mines of Guinea.

Other discussions will cover innovative financing for Africa’s mining sector, transformative mining technologies, responsible mining supply chains, sustainability, ESG criteria, and enhanced Africa-Europe collaboration through research and innovation.
