JSE-listed Mantengu Mining has announced the successful commissioning of Langpan Mining’s second chrome processing plant on December 10.

The 50 t an hour will require about 31 500 t of chrome ore feedstock to produce chrome concentrate.

Langpan has tailings on site, surveyed at about 300 000 t, carried at cost as work-in progress in inventory, that will be fed into the new chrome plant.

This estimated 300 000 t will provide Langpan with about ten months of feed based on the 31 500 t throughput rate, without any cash mining cost.

This will ramp up the mining operation to sustain two chrome plants, which require about 60 000 t a month of chrome ore feed.

The testwork was completed on the tailings and chrome plant by Gravitas Innovations.

Given the successful commissioning of the chrome plant, Langpan will now start testwork on the platinum group metals (PGM) contained in the tailings.

The company notes that PGM feedstock has not yet been valued and is not recorded as inventory on the balance sheet at present.

An announcement would be made in due course about Mantengu’s future PGM investment strategy.

In July 2022, Mantengu acquired 100% of the issued share capital of Langpan Mining, obtaining control, Mining Weekly reported at the time.

Langpan mines and processes chrome ore to produce chrome concentrate, with PGM as a by-product.
