Green hydrogen electrolyser renamed
thyssenkrupp nucera has introduced a new product name for its green hydrogen production solution. The 20 MW module will now be called ‘scalum’ – derived from the term ‘scale’ and demonstrating the product’s scalability, interconnecting multiple modules to very high plant capacities.
The company explains that scalability plays a central role in the use of green hydrogen as a carbon-free energy source, with large-scale water electrolysis plants required to produce the climate-friendly energy carrier using renewable energy.
thyssenkrupp nucera notes that it is one of the few suppliers in the world capable of providing water electrolysis technology in the gigawatt power range, adding that more than 2.5 GW of capacity to produce hydrogen using renewable energy has already been sold to customers worldwide.
Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) technology has a long track record in the green hydrogen production technology area, and thyssenkrupp nucera asserts that its chlor-alkali electrolysis technology is a strong base for its water electrolysers. It adds that its scalum product boasts low investment costs and a proven cell design with long runtime and a history of high performance.
“To reliably represent capacities to produce green hydrogen on a scale of several hundred megawatts or even gigawatts of power, our equipment must guarantee a high degree of scalability and availability. Our product name 'scalum' reflects this quality promise that we make to our customers and by which we measure ourselves,” says thyssenkrupp nucera green hydrogen head Dr Christoph Noeres.
The company says that the name ‘scalum’ is intended to express that the AWE electrolysis technology is capable of a wide range of hydrogen production capacities and is the start of a new company-wide naming system for its AWE product range in its hydrogen division.
