National power utility Eskom and water utility Rand Water will start on Phase 2 of their joint planned infrastructure maintenance programme from 07:00 on July 17.

The work will conclude at 19:00 on July 19 and will include Eskom-related electrical maintenance at the Zuikerbosch water purification plant and cross-connections from the old to the new pipelines.

During the maintenance work, pumping capacity at Rand Water's Palmiet system will be reduced to 78%, while pumping capacity at the Zwartkopjes system will be reduced to 50% and at the Eikenhof system to 55%.

No pumping will take place at the Mapleton system for 12 hours of the maintenance period.

As a result of the planned maintenance, customers in the cities of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, as well as the local municipalities of Midvaal, Victor Khanye, Govan Mbeki, Lesedi, Thembisile Hani, Mogale City, Rand West, Merafong, Rustenburg, Madibeng and the Royal Bafokeng Administration, may experience water supply disruptions.

Various industries, mines and direct customers, including Airports Company South Africa, may also be affected, Rand Water warns.

Meanwhile, it notes that the City of Ekurhuleni has also requested an opportunity to undertake its own electrical maintenance activities at Mapleton booster pumping station during the Phase 2 maintenance period.

The city plans to align its maintenance activities with Rand Water's planned maintenance work. As such, the city will undertake its maintenance activities from 08:00 to 18:00 on July 17.
