Green energy company Engie South Africa has appointed Sanjeev Mungroo MD of its renewables and batteries business, effective January 1.

Engie South Africa says in a statement issued on January 22 that Mungroo’s appointment marks a strategic step forward for the company’s growth in the country and a personal full-circle moment as Mungroo was the company’s third employee when it first established operations in the country.

Mungroo previously worked as energy finance principal at Nedbank, where he helped build one of the most successful energy finance divisions in the region.

He brings to the position more than 20 years’ experience in South Africa’s energy sector, including in engineering, finance, infrastructure, operations and business development.

His appointment comes at a time when South Africa’s electricity sector is undergoing fundamental reform with new procurement programmes, private transmission development and market liberalisation.

Mungroo’s work history also includes roles at ABB, Eskom and GDF Suez – where he worked on utility-scale renewable-energy projects, embedded generation initiatives and emerging energy trading platforms, which now shape South Africa’s evolving electricity market.

As lead of Engie’s renewables and batteries business unit in South Africa, Mungroo is overseeing development, construction, operations and engineering activities across the company’s growing project portfolio.

He will report to Engie Southern Africa country manager Mo Hoosen, who says Mungroo offers a rare combination of technical grounding, commercial acumen and market insight.

“His experience . . . will be instrumental as Engie expands its renewable and battery footprint in South Africa. It is also meaningful to welcome back someone who was present at the very beginning of our journey here.”
