Wine

Wine is an alcoholic beverage produced by the fermentation of grapes or other fruits, and represents a significant sector within the global and African alcoholic drinks industry. The wine industry encompasses viticulture (grape growing), winemaking, distribution, marketing and retail of wine products. South Africa is the continent's leading wine producer and ranks among the top ten wine-producing nations globally, with wine production concentrated in the Western Cape province. The sector contributes substantially to agricultural employment, export earnings and tourism in wine-producing regions. Wine is typically classified by colour (red, white, rosé), style (still, sparkling, fortified) and quality designation, with production ranging from bulk wines to premium estate bottlings. The industry faces regulatory oversight including excise taxation, labelling requirements and quality standards administered by national authorities. Key challenges include climate change impacts on viticulture, competition from illicit and counterfeit products, fluctuating export markets and evolving consumer preferences. Wine production in Africa extends beyond South Africa to countries including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Ethiopia, though at smaller commercial scales. The sector supports extensive supply chains including bottle manufacturing, cork production, logistics and hospitality services. Wine has been produced commercially in South Africa since the seventeenth century, establishing deep historical roots in the Cape winelands.
