University Of KwaZulu-Natal

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is a public research university in South Africa formed through the merger of the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville in 2004. The institution operates five campuses across KwaZulu-Natal province, with major sites in Durban, Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas. It is one of South Africa's leading universities, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across four colleges covering humanities, law and management studies, agriculture, engineering and science, and health sciences. The university has a student population of approximately 40 000 and employs several thousand academic and support staff. It is recognised for its research output in fields including health sciences, engineering, agriculture and social sciences. The institution plays a significant role in vehicle dynamics, transport safety and advanced driver-assistance systems research, collaborating with industry partners and government research bodies such as the CSIR. The university's engineering faculty has developed expertise in accident reconstruction and automotive technology. Since its formation, the University of KwaZulu-Natal has positioned itself as a research-intensive institution contributing to South Africa's innovation and skills development agenda, with particular strength in applied research relevant to regional and national economic priorities.
