Kolwezi

Kolwezi is a mining city in the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the capital of Lualaba province. The city sits at the heart of the Congolese Copperbelt, one of the world's richest mineral zones, and serves as a major centre for copper and cobalt extraction. Kolwezi's economy is dominated by large-scale industrial mining operations alongside a significant artisanal and small-scale mining sector. The city is home to several major mining facilities, including operations run by international mining companies and state-owned enterprises, which produce substantial volumes of cobalt—a critical mineral for battery production and the global energy transition. Kolwezi's cobalt output accounts for a significant share of global supply, making the city strategically important to electric vehicle and renewable energy supply chains. The presence of artisanal miners working alongside industrial operators has raised ongoing concerns about labour conditions, environmental management and supply-chain transparency. Kolwezi's population has grown rapidly in recent decades, driven by migration linked to mining employment and economic opportunities. The city's infrastructure and public services have struggled to keep pace with this expansion. Kolwezi was established as a mining settlement in the early twentieth century during the colonial era, when copper deposits in the region were first exploited on an industrial scale. Since independence, the city has remained central to the Democratic Republic of the Congo's mineral exports and fiscal revenues.

Kamoa-Kakula ramps up copper anode production, targets 500 000 t/y from 2028

Ivanhoe Mines' Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in Kolwezi produced 71 417 t of copper in blister and anode during the first quarter of 2026, with the on-site smelter reaching about 60% of design capacity. An updated technical report released on March 31, 2026, supports a revised mine plan expected to ramp up production to more than 500 000 t/y of copper from 2028 onwards, based on Phase 1, 2 and 3 concentrator operations at a steady-state processing rate of 17-million tonnes a year for about 25 years.

Lobito Corridor enables first low-carbon copper anode exports to Europe

Trafigura, Kamoa Copper and Aurubis completed the first sale of low-carbon copper anodes from Kolwezi in February 2026, with the cargo transported via the Lobito Atlantic Railway to the Port of Lobito for shipment to Europe, reducing inland transit times to seven days. The railway also facilitated the first delivery of copper and cobalt sourced from artisanal producers by Entreprise Générale du Cobalt, marking progress toward ethical, traceable sourcing at scale.

VEGA sensors support copper-cobalt processing at Kamoto Copper Company

VEGA Controls' VEGASWING 63 vibrating level switches are regulating water levels in acidic scrub water columns at pH 11 at Kamoto Copper Company's operations in Kolwezi. The robust sensors, which have been deployed at KCC for more than two decades, provide reliable point level detection in corrosive environments, preventing overfill incidents and protecting equipment from dry-run damage.
