Kabwe

Kabwe is a historic mining facility located in central Zambia, approximately 150 km north of the capital Lusaka. The site is best known for its large-scale lead and zinc mining operations that began in the early twentieth century and continued for nearly nine decades. At its peak, Kabwe was one of the world's most productive lead-zinc mines, operated initially by the Broken Hill Development Company and later by the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines. The mine officially closed in 1994, but its legacy remains significant both economically and environmentally. Kabwe produced substantial quantities of lead, zinc, vanadium and other metals, contributing significantly to Zambia's mining sector during the colonial and post-independence periods. The facility's closure left behind extensive environmental contamination, with lead pollution affecting soil, water and air quality in surrounding communities. Remediation efforts and renewed exploration interest have periodically emerged, with various companies examining the potential to reprocess tailings and exploit remaining mineral resources. The site remains a focal point for discussions on mining heritage, environmental rehabilitation and responsible resource extraction in Zambia.
