Helen Zille

Helen Zille is a South African politician serving as federal council chairperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA), the country's official opposition party. She is a former premier of the Western Cape province, having held that office from 2009 to 2019, and previously served as mayor of Cape Town from 2006 to 2009. Zille began her career as an investigative journalist, gaining prominence for her reporting on the death of anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in the 1970s and 1980s. She entered politics in the 1990s, initially as a member of the Democratic Party, which later merged into the DA. As Western Cape premier, she oversaw a period of relative administrative stability and service delivery performance that the DA frequently cited as a model of governance, though her tenure was not without controversy. Zille has been a polarising figure in South African politics, known for her outspoken style and willingness to engage in public debate on contentious issues including race, colonialism and economic policy. After stepping down as premier, she was elected DA federal council chairperson in 2019, a position that gives her significant influence over party strategy and coalition negotiations. She has played a central role in the DA's participation in coalition governments at municipal and provincial level. Zille's political career has been marked by both electoral successes for the DA in the Western Cape and ongoing tensions within the party over ideology and leadership direction.
