CSIR

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is South Africa's premier scientific research and development organisation, established to conduct research and innovation across multiple sectors including energy, manufacturing, agriculture, and environmental management. Headquartered in Pretoria, the CSIR operates as a statutory body under the Department of Science and Innovation, with a mandate to undertake research that addresses national development priorities and supports industrial competitiveness. The organisation maintains multiple research facilities and laboratories across South Africa, employing scientists, engineers, and technical specialists across diverse disciplines. The CSIR's work spans fundamental research, applied research, and technology development, with particular emphasis on solving practical problems facing South African industry and society. In the industrial sustainability context, the CSIR conducts research on cleaner production technologies, resource efficiency, waste management, and the transition towards circular economy models. The organisation collaborates extensively with universities, private sector enterprises, and international research institutions to advance innovation and knowledge transfer. The CSIR's contributions to industrial modernisation, environmental protection, and technological advancement have made it a central institution in South Africa's science and innovation ecosystem.

CSIR coal dust testing informs mine safety standards

CSIR research presented at the Coaltech Colloquium on May 28 shows coal dust explosibility testing at its Kloppersbos facility can shift from an older 40 ℓ explosion vessel to an internationally recognised 20 ℓ system, after establishing a reliable relationship between the two. Mechanical engineer Riaan Bergh says methane concentration has a far greater effect on explosibility than temperature or humidity, and recommends mines adjust laboratory results for actual underground conditions.
