Companies And Intellectual Property Commission

The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) is a South African government agency responsible for the registration and regulation of companies and intellectual property rights. The commission operates under the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition and administers the Companies Act, the Close Corporations Act, the Co-operatives Act and various intellectual property laws. CIPC maintains the national register of companies, close corporations and co-operatives, processing new registrations, amendments and deregistrations. The agency also registers trademarks, patents, designs and copyright, providing protection for intellectual property rights holders in South Africa. CIPC's mandate includes ensuring compliance with corporate governance requirements, processing annual returns and financial statements, and enforcing disclosure obligations. The commission provides online services for company searches, name reservations and document submissions, making corporate administration more accessible to businesses and the public. CIPC plays a crucial role in South Africa's business environment by maintaining transparency in corporate structures and protecting innovation through intellectual property registration. The commission was established in 2011 through the merger of the Companies and Intellectual Property Registration Office and the Office of the Registrar of Companies, consolidating corporate and intellectual property administration under a single entity.
