Audi

Audi is a German luxury automotive manufacturer that produces premium cars and sport utility vehicles. The company is headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, and operates manufacturing facilities across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Audi is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, one of the world's largest automotive conglomerates, and sits alongside brands such as Volkswagen, Porsche, Lamborghini and Ducati within the group's portfolio. The company's product range spans sedans, estates, coupés, convertibles and SUVs, with models including the A3, A4, A6, A8, Q3, Q5, Q7 and the high-performance R8 sports car. Audi positions itself in the premium segment, competing directly with BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The marque is known for its quattro all-wheel-drive technology, progressive design language and emphasis on engineering quality. Audi has been expanding its electric vehicle lineup under the e-tron sub-brand as part of the broader Volkswagen Group electrification strategy. The company employs tens of thousands of people globally and generates annual revenue in the tens of billions of euros. Audi was founded in 1909 by August Horch, and the name derives from the Latin translation of his surname, meaning 'listen'.

Audi secures two category wins in 2026 South African Car of the Year competition

The Audi A5 has won the Premium category and the Audi RS Q8 has claimed the Performance category in the 2026 South African Car of the Year competition, announced by the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists in May. The two models were among 18 finalists selected from more than 55 qualifying vehicles launched in 2025, with the competition marking its fortieth year.

Audi faces market-share pressure as Chinese brands gain ground

Motus CEO Ockert Janse van Rensburg describes Audi as a brand under pressure, alongside Volkswagen, Nissan and Ford, as Chinese vehicle market share in South Africa grew from 2.1% in 2019 to 15.2% in 2025. Motus has responded by placing Volkswagen and Audi under the same dealership roof in some instances, though the company emphasises it has no plans to abandon the brands, which still trade at high volumes.

New Audi South Africa head brings direct-to-customer experience

Markus Schuster has been appointed head of Audi South Africa, joining with more than two decades of global automotive experience and having most recently served as Audi Singapore managing director, where he led the transformation of the subsidiary into Audi's first direct-to-customer franchise worldwide. Audi South Africa is preparing to launch 21 new models over the next two years, including the new Q7, Q8, A3, A5, Q3 and Q5 ranges.
