Rio Tinto is working to open mines in Argentina and Canada that can remain economical even if lithium prices drop again, as the company aims to triple production to 200 000 t a year by 2028. The miner expects its lithium business to grow faster than its copper, iron-ore and other divisions, following last year's acquisition of US-based Arcadium, which brought access to mines, processing facilities and deposits across four continents.

The project will produce an average 5.9-million ounces of silver and 62 000 oz of gold a year, with initial capital expenditure estimated at $722-million and first production targeted before the end of 2029.
Ganfeng and Lithium Argentina seek third investor for $3-billion projectChinese miner Ganfeng Lithium and Swiss partner Lithium Argentina are seeking a third investor for the Pozuelos-Pastos Grandes lithium project in Salta province, which is expected to produce 150 000 t of lithium a year over three stages. In March, Ganfeng applied to include the project in Argentina's Large Investment Incentive Regime, which provides tax benefits and long-term stability for investments greater than $200-million.
