Africa-focused mobile infrastructure operator IHS has secured contracts for the operation of all France Telecom-Orange subsidiaries’ towers in Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon.

The 15-year deal with Orange subsidiaries Côte d'Ivoire Telecom, Orange Côte d'Ivoire and Orange Cameroon would see IHS manage and improve efficiencies at over 2 000 sites in both countries.

While the towers would remain the property of the Orange subsidiaries, IHS would work to reduce Orange’s cost base, while expanding the networks.

IHS committed to building new hybrid solar and generator power sites to cut diesel consumption at these sites by up to 70%.

“IHS's focus on the passive infrastructure will enable and accelerate further network modernisation, particularly in the areas of efficient grid and diesel use and the growing use of renewable energy to power the network,” the group said in a statement.

Through IHS’s tower-sharing model, available space on the towers would be marketed to other mobile operators, while Orange subsidiaries would benefit from access to available slots on towers that IHS currently owns in both countries.

“This agreement leaves open the possibility for Orange subsidiaries elsewhere in Africa and the Middle East to look into similar partnerships,” said Orange Group executive director for Africa, Middle East and Asia Marc Rennard.
