The Western Cape government will provide over 700 matriculants with work experience to bolster their chances of sustainable employment opportunities owing to the Department of the Premier committing R27-million to this year’s Advancement for Youth (PAY) project.

The PAY project, which was established by Premier Helen Zille in 2011, absorbed 776 interns who, on Monday, would kick off one-year internships at the Western Cape government’s 13 departments.

Western Cape Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Minister Alan Winde, who officially welcomed the 2014 PAY project interns at the Western Cape Sport School, in Kuils River, on Friday, said the programme had created 2 251 internships since 2012.

During the internship, participants would complete several skills development courses, including financial management, information technology training, curriculum vitae writing and interview skills, and, as part of their work readiness training, they would receive an induction into how national and regional governments operated.

“This is a great opportunity for our young people to obtain the on-the-job experience they need to get their first foothold into the economy,” Winde said, adding that the Western Cape government was “serious about skills development” and had committed R300-million for “a range of these initiatives” over the next three years.
