We are not telling our story enough – Anglo Coal CEO
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The “story” of what the industry that led to the creation of South Africa’s biggest economy was doing to assist development was not being told enough, Anglo American Coal South Africa CEO Themba Mkhwanazi said on Thursday.
He noted that the mining industry had a lot of successes in terms of developing the often remote, rural or underdeveloped communities – with little infrastructure – where the mining groups had rooted themselves in.
The mining companies have been actively involved in the development of roads, water, electricity, health and education infrastructure and contributed significantly to the construction of essential services in the areas in which they operated.
“We forget the role that mining has played in infrastructure development,” he said at the 2014 Mining Lekgotla, in Midrand.
Mkhwanazi stressed that the mining industry aspired to be a “true development” partner, noting that infrastructure development would be the catalyst for growth.
South Africa could see several thriving metropolises and economies if all stakeholders worked together to develop a mining town, echoing the success of Johannesburg, where there was a conscious effort to support, plan and invest in “the boom”.
“If we get this [successful integrated infrastructure development] right we can create several cities like Johannesburg – a mining town that leveraged the boom of a mining [era].”
“That is the potential of [combining] mining and infrastructure [if labour, communities, government and companies come together],” he stated.
Anglo Coal continued to engage local municipalities to build capacity and roll out infrastructure over and above its social plan.
