Nonprofit organisation Project Isizwe has taken the top spot in two categories at the 2015 AfricaCom Awards, held in Cape Town.

The group’s Tshwane Free WiFi Project won Best Connectivity Solution for Africa, while its Tshwane WiFi Voice mobile app was awarded Best App for Africa.

Project Isizwe has been working with government to bring free WiFi to low-income areas across South Africa, with significant progress made so far in Tshwane.

Tshwane Free WiFi, offering 500 MB, at average speeds of 15 Mb/s, per device per day and unlimited access to educational, employment-focused, entrepreneurship and entertainment content, had over 700 live sites and connected one-million unique users.

“The Tshwane Free WiFi service will be expanding to ensure that WiFi is within walking distance of every citizen by 2017,” said incoming CEO and current COO Zahir Khan, who was succeeding Alan Knott-Craig Jr, effective January.

“The model can be replicated throughout Africa based on the proven success of Tshwane Free WiFi to use connectivity as a catalyst for positive change,” he explained.

Tshwane WiFi Voice allowed free calls between users on the network and free calls to the City of Tshwane customer care call centre.
