MTN, IHS sign new Nigerian tower deal
IHS Holdings’ Africa-based tower portfolio would grow to over 20 000 after an in-principle agreement with telecommunications giant MTN would see up to 9 151 mobile network towers in Nigeria transferred to IHS.
From the fourth quarter of 2014 – subject to requisite regulatory approvals – the towers would be transferred to a new company jointly owned by MTN and IHS.
The joint venture (JV) company would market independent infrastructure sharing services to other mobile operators and Internet service providers in Nigeria, with IHS holding full operational control of the underlying business.
The JV committed to inject more than $500-million over the next four years into tower upgrades and a maintenance programme to improve quality of service and enhance the customer experience on the MTN Nigeria network.
IHS planned further investments into its Nigeria-based centralised network operations centre to optimise operations and increase network uptimes to over 99%.
The company also aimed to deploy advanced generators, batteries and alternative power solutions to reduce diesel consumption and ensure energy efficiency.
“The transaction is expected to reduce MTN Nigeria’s operating costs, drive network efficiencies and further expand MTN’s voice and data capacity,” said MTN group president and CEO Sifiso Dabengwa.
This marked the ninth tower transaction for IHS and its fifth with MTN following the transactions in Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Rwanda and Zambia during 2012 and 2013.
