The JSE this week experienced a record number of trades on the bourse’s equity market.

A total of 395 969 trades, valued at R24.6-billion, took place on the JSE on Thursday.

This was well above the previous intraday record of just under 300 000 trades on the JSE Equity Market, the JSE said in a statement on Friday.

The average number of trades a day in this market during 2014 was about 176 000.

“Records like this show that the JSE continues to provide a stable, credible and world-class trading platform, as well as access to a very liquid market with deep pools of capital,” said JSE Trading and Market Services director Leanne Parsons.

The JSE’s trading systems handled the large number of transactions without any difficulty.
