JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Mining companies Anglo American South Africa, AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony Gold and Sibanye Gold are continuing with measures to tackle issues relating to compensation and medical care for occupational lung disease in the gold mining industry in South Africa.

“Further initial interactions have taken place with a range of stakeholders in the interim, including other mining companies, organised labour, senior government officials and legal representatives of claimants who have filed legal suits against the companies.

“The purpose of these interactions is to invite interested stakeholders to participate in a multistakeholder engagement,” the companies reported in a joint statement on Friday.

The companies reiterated that they were aiming to achieve a comprehensive solution in the engagement, which dealt both with the legacy compensation issues and future legal frameworks and which was fair to employees and also ensured the future sustainability of companies in the gold mining industry.
