State-owned power utility Eskom will be temporarily shutting down certain sections of the R21 highway on Sunday to complete the replacement of the Apollo-Croydon transmission line.

This Sunday, there will be temporary road closures between 05:00 and 18:00 at the Flying Saucer interchange and Olifantsfontein drive on the R21 freeway to replace the line conductor brought down after a truck hit one of the towers in May.

The construction work began on June 9 following the appointment of a suitable contractor and the conclusion of the designs.

The Apollo-Croydon 275 kV transmission line between Nellmapius and Olifantsfontein drive on the R21 highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria will be commissioned on August 16.

Alternative routes included Botha avenue, Olifantsfontein drive, the N1, the N3, Rigel avenue and Delmas road.
