Process Automation

Process automation is the use of technology to perform repetitive tasks and workflows with minimal human intervention, spanning both physical industrial processes and digital business operations. The field encompasses a spectrum of technologies, from traditional programmable logic controllers and supervisory control and data acquisition systems in manufacturing and mining to robotic process automation for office tasks and hyper-automation platforms that combine multiple intelligent technologies. In industrial settings, process automation controls and optimises production lines, chemical processes, mineral processing plants and utility operations, improving consistency, safety and efficiency while reducing labour costs and human error. Modern process automation increasingly integrates artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital twins to enable predictive maintenance, adaptive control and real-time optimisation. The Internet of Things has expanded the scope of process automation by connecting sensors, actuators and control systems across distributed facilities, enabling centralised monitoring and coordination. Cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure now host process automation applications, allowing remote access, advanced analytics and integration with enterprise resource planning systems. Major vendors in the space include Schneider Electric, which supplies industrial automation hardware and software, and AVEVA, which provides process simulation and operations management platforms. Robotic process automation tools from providers such as UiPath automate repetitive digital tasks in finance, human resources and supply-chain functions. Process automation is a key enabler of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, driving productivity gains and operational resilience across sectors. Adoption is particularly strong in capital-intensive industries such as mining, oil and gas, chemicals and automotive manufacturing, where process consistency and uptime are critical to profitability.

Schneider Electric launches open, software-defined DCS platform

Schneider Electric has unveiled its EcoStruxure Foxboro Software Defined Automation platform, described as the industry's first open, software-defined distributed control system. The platform decouples hardware from software to deliver vendor independence, interoperability and flexible architectures while maintaining IEC 62443-3-3 cybersecurity compliance and enabling IT/OT convergence, AI/ML integration and autonomous operations for Industry 4.0.

Virtualisation decouples control systems from hardware obsolescence

Process plants are virtualising DCS environments to escape the hardware refresh cycle driven by ageing servers and unsupported operating systems. By hosting engineering workstations, HMIs, historians and application servers as virtual machines, operators can migrate workloads between hosts without downtime, enabling live maintenance and shifting lifecycle management from hardware-driven to software-driven planning.

AI adoption scales in industrial operations despite infrastructure gaps

Cisco Research reports that 61% of organisations are using AI in live industrial operations, with 20% having scaled, mature deployments delivering measurable benefits in process automation, quality inspection, predictive maintenance and energy forecasting. However, readiness gaps persist in networking infrastructure, cybersecurity and IT/OT collaboration, with 40% citing cybersecurity as the biggest obstacle to scaling AI.
