Economic Freedom Fighters

The Economic Freedom Fighters is a South African political party founded in 2013 by former African National Congress Youth League president Julius Malema and other expelled ANC members. The party positions itself as a radical left-wing organisation advocating for economic emancipation through policies including land expropriation without compensation, nationalisation of mines and banks, and free quality education and healthcare. The EFF adopts Marxist-Leninist and pan-Africanist ideology, drawing inspiration from revolutionary movements across the continent. The party is known for its distinctive red berets and military-style regalia worn by members, symbolising its revolutionary character. Since its formation, the EFF has grown to become the third-largest party in the South African Parliament, having secured significant vote shares in successive national and local elections. The party employs confrontational tactics in Parliament, including disrupting proceedings and challenging the executive, particularly on issues of corruption and inequality. Its support base is concentrated among younger, urban voters and those frustrated with the pace of economic transformation since the end of apartheid. The EFF has also established a presence in local government across South Africa's metropolitan areas. The party's economic policies and rhetoric have made it a polarising force in South African politics, drawing both strong support and criticism from various sectors of society. Under Malema's leadership, the EFF has positioned itself as a voice for the dispossessed and a challenger to the ANC's dominance in post-apartheid South African politics.
