Compensation Fund

The Compensation Fund is a South African statutory organisation that administers compensation for workplace injuries and occupational diseases. It operates under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) of 1993, which replaced earlier workers' compensation legislation. The Fund provides no-fault insurance cover to employees who are injured or contract diseases in the course of their employment, as well as to dependants of workers who die as a result of occupational incidents. Employers in most sectors are required to register with the Fund and pay annual assessments based on their payroll and industry risk profile. The Compensation Fund processes claims, determines eligibility, and disburses benefits including medical costs, temporary and permanent disability pensions, and funeral grants. It falls under the oversight of the Department of Employment and Labour and is funded entirely by employer contributions, with no cost to employees. The organisation maintains regional offices across South Africa to handle claims and conduct inspections. Its mandate includes promoting workplace health and safety through education and enforcement. The Compensation Fund plays a critical role in South Africa's social security framework, handling hundreds of thousands of claims annually. It has faced periodic challenges related to claims backlogs, financial sustainability, and administrative capacity, prompting ongoing reform efforts to improve service delivery and governance.
