Wits elects Carolissen as chair, Bruce as deputy chair

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Council has elected Dr Randall Carolissen and Dr Brian Bruce as its new chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively.

Carolissen, who is currently the group executive of revenue planning, analysis and reporting for the South African Revenue Service (Sars), has been an active member of the Wits University Council since 2008 and has served in various capacities on its subcommittees.

He is also a trustee of the Wits Foundation and has fiduciary responsibility for the development and approval process of Wits’ budget, as well as that of its subsidiaries.

Carolissen was previously appointed by Professor Kader Asmal to serve as a commissioner on the South African Chapter of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

He boasts a PhD in Solid State Physics from the University of the Western Cape, an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch cum laude, and an MCom in International Tax from the University of the Northwest.

Carolissen has, in the past, also held the position of group MD for the South African Bureau of Standards’ Commercial division, as well as other high-level positions at Sars.

Incoming deputy chairperson Dr Brian Bruce has been an active member of the Wits University Council since 2007 and has served in various capacities on its subcommittees. 

The former Murray & Roberts CEO is also a former chairperson of the Construction Industry Development Board. He holds a PrEng, BSc Eng (Civil) and DEng (hc).
