The Western Cape High Court has reserved judgement in the court case launched by agricultural association Vinpro over the approach towards liquor ban restrictions within the Disaster Management Act followed by the South African government.

Following arguments from the legal representatives of Vinpro and government, the full bench of three judges has reserved judgment on the three points argued, which included Vinpro’s argument regarding the structure of government, an interim application asking to take evidence regarding the third wave into account and the issue of mootness since the most recent ban has been partially lifted.

“We are hopeful for a positive outcome and eagerly await feedback on these important principles that would govern decision-making regarding future wine sales bans,” says Vinpro MD Rico Basson.

“In the interim, we remain committed to our various efforts to fully reopen and rebuild the South African wine industry,” he notes.
