Hiace production at the Toyota Prospecton plant in Durban
Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has suspended production at its Prospecton plant, in Durban, as well as business operations at some of its dealerships in KwaZulu-Natal, as widespread looting and rioting continue in KwaZulu-Natal.
Exports from the plant have also been halted.
“The ongoing situation has also impacted the delivery of new vehicles, as well as parts supply in the affected areas,” a TSAM spokesperson tells Engineering News Online.
“TSAM wishes to apologise to its customers for the inconvenience and would like to assure them that their safety, as well as that of its staff, remains paramount.
“The local automotive company is also urging all its stakeholders, including suppliers and business partners, to exercise caution and stay safe during these challenging times.”
TSAM produces the Toyota Hilux bakkie, Fortuner sports-utility vehicle and Corolla Quest for the local and export markets.
The plant also assembles the Hiace Ses’fikile minibus for the domestic taxi market, as well as a number of Hino trucks for the local commercial vehicle industry.
