Toyota on top in used-car market – AutoTrader report

AutoTrader’s mid-year car industry report shows that Toyota was the leading brand in the local used-car market for the first six months of the year, selling 28 061 passenger cars and achieving a 17% market share, this according to AutoTrader data.

The average price of the Toyota vehicles sold during this period came to R420 021, with an average mileage of 86 373 km and an average model year of 2018.

Volkswagen took second position, with 22 640 used passenger-car sales, with Ford in third spot, at 18 836 used passenger-car sales.

Toyota, however, did not reign supreme when it came to the top-selling used car model in South Africa, says AutoTrader.

That honour belonged to the Ford Ranger, which had an average selling price of R433 371, with an average mileage of 90 659 km and an average model year of 2010.

The Ranger accounted for more than 9 301 used-car units sold in the first six months of the year, at 6% of the overall sales figure.

To put this in context, this number surpassed the total sales of Nissan, Audi, Kia and Renault.

Toyota’s Hilux bakkie was the second most-sold used car in South Africa.

The Volkswagen Polo, in third place, took the remaining podium position.

The list of the top ten most-sold used cars in the first half of the year was similar to that of new-vehicle sales.

The top ten most-sold used models collectively represented 29% of all used models sold.

“In the first six months of 2023, over 263-million vehicle searches were conducted on AutoTrader,” says CEO George Mienie.

“This translates to over 17 consumer searches per second.”
