TOO MANY BICYCLES IN BEIJING

Katie Melua’s Nine Million Bicycles song may have been a smash hit globally, but bike-sharing schemes across many Chinese cities have now officially become a national menace. Across Chinese cities, sidewalks are filling up with bicycles, owing to the poor regulation of the popular sharing schemes. The proliferation of such schemes has created mayhem as thousands of bikes are dumped in already crowded public spaces. A number of cities, including the subject of Melua’s hit, Beijing, are banning new shared bikes and instituting regulations to clean up parking. Pictured above are ride-sharing bicycles piled up in Shanghai, China.
