The Gauteng Provincial Treasury (GPT) has appointed ten technical advisers to be deployed across various municipalities to enhance the financial management capacity in local government.

Forming part of GPT’s municipal finance hands-on support programme to municipalities, this will address the financial management and financial reporting capacity challenges in local government, says Gauteng Finance MEC Jacob Mamabolo.

“I expect these advisers to help us close the gaps and resolve some of the recurring financial problems in our municipalities,” he says.

Two of the appointed advisers were deployed on September 1, 2022, to the Sedibeng and West Rand regions to provide support in the implementation of the Municipal Standard Chart of Accounts.

The remaining eight advisers are earmarked to provide technical support to municipalities in the areas of budgeting, revenue and expenditure management, supply chain management, asset management, accounting and audit services.

Three of these technical advisers started during December and January in the Emfuleni, Rand West City and Mogale City local municipalities, while the placement of the remaining five technical advisers is being finalised.

It is envisaged that the placement of these advisers across the Midvaal, Lesedi and Merafong City local municipalities and the Sedibeng and West Rand district municipalities, will be finalised during the first quarter of this financial year.
