Switching solutions for the renewables industry

Denver Technical is the South African distributor of GIGAVAC products

A range of US-manufactured power contactors and switches specifically suited to the renewables industry, is now available in South Africa.

Johannesburg-based Denver Technical is the South African distributor of a number of GIGAVAC products, such as high voltage relays, power contactors and switches.

HX series for combiner boxes, inverters and junction boxes

GIGAVAC’s HX series of high voltage contactors are recognised as the world’s smallest UL508 approved contactors for 1000 Vdc hot switching. The hermetically-sealed, high voltage DC contactors are said to exceed the requirements in IP67 and IP69 sealing standards.

The stand-up mounting design is aimed at facilitating installation of the Extended Performance Impervious Ceramic (EPIC) sealed contactors in tight locations. In addition, the HX contactors are not position-sensitive, meaning that they can be mounted in any axis and in any position. The HX21 and HX22 include an integrated safety cover that is designed to be easy to remove, further aiding installation. The EPIC sealed HX Series switches are complemented by 12 V, 24 V or 48 V DC coil options. GIGAVAC's dual coil design offers low power consumption and no electromagnetic interference emissions and integrated coil noise suppression. These features combine to offer ease of coil driver design and implementation.

The company highlights that since introducing the EPIC seal in 2006, GIGAVAC sealed contactors have become the preferred choice for any application requiring sealed switching. It affirms that the HX series is robust enough to withstand almost any harsh environment, whether underwater or in the desert sun. The HX series high voltage hermetically sealed contactors are said to be particularly suited for inverter systems, battery packs and combiner boxes in solar or wind power systems. The HX series is also said to be ideal for electric vehicles with high voltage battery systems, such as high-performance electric vehicles, electric buses and electric trucks. The HX series now includes packaging options with the HX21, HX22 and HX200.

PSeries MiniTACTOR

GIGAVAC emphasises that its line of patented switching devices, MiniTACTOR series of power contactors, are small, lightweight and cost effective. Designed and manufactured in the US, the hermetically sealed MiniTACTOR is part of the company’s range of sealed switching products including High Voltage Relays and EPIC sealed contactors. Weighing less than 100 g, the GIGAVAC P105 and P115 is designed for fast and easy installation in any orientation on a panel. A sealed chamber for both contacts and coil, helps to ensure clean switching in any environment. Safe make-and-break power switching can be achieved at any voltage up to 1500 Vdc. With bi-directional switching capability and current carry to 50, the MiniTACTOR is seen as the perfect choice for pre-charge, charge and solar applications. The UL-certified cruus, P115 MiniTACTOR is compliant with solar energy requirements under NEC 690.11 and NEC 690.12. Both models are seen as extremely cost-effective, boasting  performance specifications usually found only in far more expensive contactors.

HBD series manual disconnect switches

GIGAVAC manual disconnect switches are said to provide a level of sealed switching technology to meet any application requirement. All GIGAVAC manual disconnect switches incorporate important key features such as composite housings, stainless steel hardware and lock-out/tag-out, according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements.

Using patent-pending technology the company asserts that its HBD series is the first truly hermetic high power manual disconnect switch. It can be mounted in almost any environment and can be placed near vehicle batteries, which helps to eliminate extra cable length that is normally required to place traditional switches inside a vehicle’s interior.
