There has been some progress in sustainability in the cement and broader infrastructure industry, with several innovations by companies and countries, but more should be done, says consultant Tony Hadley.
Speaking on day two of the Sustainability Summit on September 22, during the Sustainable Infrastructure Seminar in Partnership with PPC, Hadley said that complacency and resisting change was one of the biggest issues in the broader construction sector.
Breaking away from how things have always been done in the cement, concrete and construction industry will be important to ensure more sustainable practices.
In terms of the cement industry, Hadley noted that carbon would disrupt and transform the cement industry faster and deeper than ever before.
“It is not a choice, the laggard will fall. The impact is that investors will disenfranchise you,” Hadley said.
He noted that carbon targets would continue to tighten, and that carbon taxes would continue to rise and spread globally.
Hadley said that considerable progress could be made by 2025, but that the industry had to act now.
China and India were currently leading progress in sustainable infrastructure development, he noted.
