Supporting Solar Energy Solutions in South Africa

1st June 2017

As part of the government’s Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Programme (REIPPP), that aims to secure 13 225 MW of renewable energy for the South African power grid by 2025, a new 100MW solar power plant is being built near Upington in the Northern Cape. The Ilanga Solar Power Plant is a concentrating parabolic trough plant with a thermal energy storage system.

To assist in the construction of the new facility, that will form part of the Karoshoek Solar Thermal Park located approximately 30 km east of Upington, Kwikspace Modular Buildings recently delivered three 200 m2 mobile office buildings to the project. Kwikspace was invited to tender for this contract as a result of their successful provision of site accommodation for the client on the Letsatsi Solar Power Plant in the Free State.

Using modular construction methods, Kwikspace was able to fully prefabricate the mobile office units in their specialist Gauteng facility. To ease transportation, the buildings were brought to the project in sections and fully assembled by Kwikspace operatives once on site. The use of modular construction methods enabled delivery of high quality office space in less than three months.

Kwikspace offices provide a comfortable and safe working environment.  The wall panels have a dense polyurethane core that is fire retardant and offers excellent noise reduction and thermal insulation. The structures have a rigidised Chromadek skin that’s strong and easy to maintain, giving the units a lifespan of approximately 20 years. Kwikspace also supplied and installed Furniture, Telecommunications and air-conditioning units.

Comments Roberto Campos, Kwikspace Sales Executive: “This adds to our growing portfolio of work in the renewable energy sector, having already provided site accommodation to solar power plants including the Xina Solar One Plant and the Kathu Solar Project in the Northern Cape. Kwikspace is thrilled to play a part in providing South African households with clean energy solutions.”

Kwikspace worked hard to ensure that they were working in accordance with the client’s strict health and safety regulations at all times during the delivery of this scheme. As a result, there were no accidents or incidents caused as a result of Kwikspace operations on the site.
