Southern Africa on par with international dust management trends

International mobile equipment solutions supplier Pilot Crushtec International states that the Southern African region has been keeping pace with stringent global regulations regarding the management of dust pollution.

Pilot Crushtec International sales director Graham Kleinhans says despite the region’s heavy dependence on extractive industries and ongoing infrastructure development projects – both of which lead to the creation of dust – the region manages to use systems that are on par with the rest of the world.

“This need for improved health, safety and environmental standards has prompted Pilot Crushtec International to identify and source an effective mobile dust suppression system.

“We have found that the Dust Fighter range of products is specifically designed to enable operators to meet rigorous European Union health and safety regulations for dust control,” explains Kleinhans.

Pilot Crushtec International offers two Dust Fighter products, the DF 7 500, dispersing 2 000 ℓ/h and the DF 15 000 which can emit 3 000 ℓ/h.

Dust Fighter products are produced in Italy, by DF Ecology and Pilot Crushtec International is the Southern Africa exclusive distributor. The product is fully supported by Pilot Crushtec International service and warranty programmes.

Kleinhans states that Dust Fighter products suppress airborne material by spraying water in the form of an ultrafine mist made up of droplets sized between four and six microns.

A single unit, which discharges water at a rate of 2 000 ℓ/h, can oscillate its spray through a radius of 335º and effectively mitigates the effects of airborne dust across a widespread area of up to 50 m.

“An important safety feature is that the fineness of the mist emitted ensures that there is no residual groundwater that could create muddy or slippery surfaces.

“Compact, highly mobile and relatively inexpensive, the Dust Fighter provides the ideal dust suppression solution to the crushing and screening industry,” details Kleinhans.

He adds that the machines features a 25 m cable with plugs; two wheel site tow running gear and jaw bar; forklift pockets; two height adjustable stabilisers; quick fit connections; an onboard control panel; 80 µm mesh inlet water filter and prenozzle filter; a water pressure gauge; a height adjustable handle; a phase inverter; an automated oscillation system, and a remote control facility.

Tshwane Municipality Project
Pilot Crushtec International worked on a project with the Tshwane municipal fire department on the implosion of the Munitoria Building, north of Pretoria, in 2013. Pilot’s Dust Fighter 7 500 was used to prepare the site for demolition and to mitigate airborne dust.

“The Dust Fighter’s capabilities were displayed in front of several thousand onlookers watching the weekend implosion. The unit impressed with its simplicity and visibly powerful performance.

“We simply towed it to the demolition site, plugged it into a mains power supply and were ready to go,” concludes Kleinhans.
