Name of the Project
South Fork Wind Farm.

Off the shore of New York, in the US.

Project Owner/s
The project is a 50:50 joint venture (JV) between Ørsted and Eversource.

Project Description
South Fork is New York’s first offshore wind farm.

The 132 MW wind farm will feature 12 turbines and a state-of-the-art transmission system that will generate enough clean energy to power 70 000 average homes and offset tons of emissions every year.

The wind farm will deliver power through a 138kV/AC transmission line directly to the East Hampton substation, located off the Cove Hollow road.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
The project started construction in February 2022 and is expected to be operational by the end of 2023 or in early 2024.

Latest Developments
The first offshore wind turbine for South Fork Wind has been successfully installed.

The first of South Fork Wind’s 12 Siemens Gamesa wind turbine generators was hoisted into place by the offshore construction team at the project site. All 12 turbines are expected to be installed by the end of 2023 or in early 2024.

Van Oord has been chosen by the Ørsted and Eversource JV for the transport and installation of wind turbine generators for the wind farm. Currently, offshore installation vessel, the Aeolus, is installing the turbines. Turbine installation involves using a crane to place the steel turbine tower onto the foundation. The nacelle and rotor are then installed on top of the tower. The blades are then lifted and installed individually by bolting them to the rotor.

The wind farm reached its “steel in the water” milestone in June 2023, with the installation of the project’s first monopile foundation.

Once in operation, South Fork Wind will be supported by US-built crew transfer vessels and, eventually, by the US’s first offshore wind service operations vessel.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
