South Africa must take steps to sustain its invaluable gold mining industry

When I heard that Japan is opening its doors to gold exploration, I got thinking about how wonderful it would be right now if South Africa was still the biggest gold producer in the world.

Gold pulls an economy up when most of the other sectors are down, like right now. Given our rich gold heritage, South Africans should be the first to acknowledge that. Yet Japan, a country that hasn’t explored for gold since the war, has changed its mining laws to attract the big companies to come in and make it gold rich.

Leading the charge into Japan is, you guessed it, a South African, but now in Canadian colours. We must take strong steps to sustain our gold sector, which is great when there’s global trouble and, as Covid has taught us, you never know when more of that will arise.
