SOMBRE MESSAGE

After releasing dismal interim results last week and warning of a R15-billion loss for 2018/19, Eskom CEO Phakamani Hadebe concluded his presentation as follows: “We are facing operational and financial challenges and we have initiatives that are earmarked to deal with these issues. Are they sufficient to take us through? No, they are not!” He then went on to call for a partnership between Eskom, its shareholder and its customers to support a “sustainable” turnaround of the debt-laden utility. Given the reputational damage that has been done over the past ten years, finding willing partners will be easier said than done.
