SOLAR WINDFALL

Saudi Arabia has received an offer to supply solar electricity for the cheapest price ever recorded. Bloomberg reports that Abu Dhabi’s Masdar and Electricite de France bid to supply power from a 300 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant for as little as US1.79c/KWh. If awarded, that would beat the previous record of US2.42c/KWh for a solar project in Abu Dhabi. The bid reaffirms the sharp drop in solar PV costs globally. In fact, prior to the stalling of South Africa’s renewables programme, it too was beginning to reap the benefits of falling solar costs.
