SOLAR AT NIGHT

A 100 MW solar plant, which has been developed near the town of Pofadder, in the Northern Cape, has officially been inaugurated. Known as KaXu Solar One, the thermal electricity power plant incorporates a storage system that enables it to produce electricity 2.5 hours after sunset, or before dawn. The R8-billion parabolic-trough facility is 3 km long and a kilometre wide and contains 1 200 collectors, as well as a molten-salt energy-storage system.
