In June 2020, Sika South Africa first reached out to Tholuthando Children’s Home, located in Hillcrest. The home is run by Sindi and her eldest daughter, two very phenomenal women. They selflessly care for forty-five children, ranging in age from 10 months to 19 years. These children have either been abandoned, suffered abuse, or were given in by those unable to care for them. Donations of pre-loved items and groceries were made by Sika, and this was where the beginning of our journey with the Tholuthando Children’s Home was formed. The home has really touched our hearts as it is a place where the children truly do come first, so when further opportunities of need surfaced at the beginning of 2021, Sika showed up to support them.
There were still many aspects of the home that needed repair, maintenance and attention. Immediately, it was noted that their washing machine was not working – an obvious and sizeable inconvenience to the carers. Sika ensured it was fixed right away. Also apparent, was a need to repair and address a variety of electrical issues around the building - Sika went in head on and sorted them all out. A brand-new chest-freezer was donated to the home, as well as bath and shower curtains for the communal bathrooms. The next project, the biggest yet, was for Sika to sort out the plumbing in the home, which had become a health risk.
The plumbing fixes were numerous and necessary. They included tasks such as: rodding to clear blocked drains and gullies, replacing pipes and joins where necessary, reconnecting the soak pit to the septic tank, desludging and repairing the septic tank, replacing downpipes and gutters, facilitating JoJo tank overflow… Sika was proudly able to upgrade the home’s plumbing systems to ensure safe and hygienic environment for all.
This home is a haven for all these kids. It’s a place where they find safety, comfort, love and provision of their basic needs. Sika is standing together with Sindi and the Tholuthando Children’s Home, to give hope for, and achieve, a better future for each of the kids.
