The Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) has appointed Saliem Fakir as the new board chairperson, effective from January 15.

Fakir is a globally recognised leader in sustainability, climate policy and finance, and brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to drive green transformation within the company.

ASEZ majority shareholder representative Western Cape Finance, Economic Opportunities and Tourism Minister Mireille Wenger confirmed Fakir's appointment.

"I am excited about the fresh perspective and insights Mr Fakir will continue to bring to the board and look forward to working together to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead,” she said.

"Appointing Mr Fakir as chairperson will strengthen the direction and governance of the company, and we welcome his appointment,” expressed Economic Opportunities MMC Alderman James Vos, speaking on behalf of the City of Cape Town.

Fakir is the executive director of the African Climate Foundation and has an extensive background, having spent 11 years as the head of the policy and futures unit at nongovernmental organisation World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa, and holding key positions at Stellenbosch University and the World Conservation Union South Africa.

"I am honoured to take on the role of board chairperson at the ASEZ. I look forward to collaborating with the board, management and shareholders to further the company's commitment to sustainability and innovation," shared Fakir.

This role will be passed on from deputy director-general at the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism Jo-Ann Johnston.

Johnston played a key role in creating the ASEZ, which she and her team successfully implemented through a committed inter-governmental partnership.

Now that a strong foundation has been established, the business may go forward. Johnston will continue to serve on the board and assist Fakir in his new capacity.

The appointment of Fakir is expected to bring a fresh perspective and enhance the company's strategic direction towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
