SAIMechE appoints first female president

The South African Institution for Mechanical Engineers (SAIMechE) has elected Professor Debby Blaine president for the 2018 to 2020 period.

Blaine is an associate professor at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. She has served on the organisation’s Western Cape branch committee since 2007.

In 2012, she was elected as the first female chairperson of the Western Cape committee, a position that she held for the 2011 to 2013 period.

Additionally, Blaine was co-opted onto the organisation’s national council in 2017 and was assigned the engineering education portfolio.

Meanwhile, she is also serving as president of the South African Society for Engineering Education.
