South Africa’s Competition Commission and its Namibian counterpart this week inked a deal to formalise and promote cooperation in competition law and policy enforcement within the two Southern African countries.
The memorandum of understanding, said to be the first of its kind in Africa, cemented the relationship between South Africa and Namibia and aimed to improve cooperation, particularly for multijurisdiction projects, such as mergers.
“Our laws tend to be similar, which makes cooperation easier,” said South African Competition Commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele.
This emerged a day before South Africa’s Competition Commission and Competition Tribunal kicked off the ninth Conference on Competition Law, Economics and Policy, being held in Durban.
This was ahead of the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, or Brics, International Competition Conference being held from November 10 to 13.
