Without doubt, social media has empowered citizens and activists to influence national and international debates as never before. However, these technologies have a dark side. Besides the unsettling phenomenon of fake news, an atmosphere of unrestrained hostility is also prevalent. For South Africa, which is already divided, such hostility can undermine much-needed social dialogue and consensus building.
