The Royal Mail, which is nearly 500 years old, began trading on the London Stock Exchange on October 15 following a somewhat controversial privatisation – the UK government’s biggest flotation in two decades. There was significant opposition to the sale of the “cherished national institution” and there was also much controversy over the valuation of the company, with critics arguing that taxpayers did not receive full value from the initial public offering.
