On October 11, Abiy was honoured for his “efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea. It is the second successive year that the Oslo-based Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the prize to an African.
